SKIPPER He's The One Come Back

A Skipper’s Own Page

What A Business
Actually Sees

Nobody here has a curriculum vitae. A Skipper has a Portrait — what he has actually done, what he will take on, and how he works, drawn out of him rather than typed in by him. This is the shape of one.

Everything below is an example, written to show the shape. It is not a real man and nobody on this page exists.

An Example Skipper

Steer · Rescue · Hand Over

“I have already had the year you are about to have.”

The Turn He Is Known For

A manufacturer with 90 people, eleven months from the wall, and a founder who could not say the word out loud. He said it in the first week. They kept 74 of the 90 and the business is still there. He will tell you what the other sixteen cost him.

What He Will Not Do

He does not write strategy documents for somebody else to present. He does not come in without being allowed to say the true thing in the room. And he will not take the work if he thinks you need somebody cheaper.

How He Works

In the building on Tuesdays, on the phone whenever it matters, and honest by the second week rather than the second quarter. He would rather be wrong early than agreeable for a month.

The Year He Does Not Talk About

He talks about it. 2011, a partner he trusted, and a company he does not own any more. He says it is the most useful thing he owns and the reason he can smell it coming in somebody else’s business.

How He Thinks

The Devil’s Advocate

The board had agreed the number twice. He said it was wrong in front of all nine of them and put the working on the table. They re-cut it and made the year.

Since agreed by A manufacturer in Dandenong, A logistics business in Geelong.

Businesses Who Have Had Him

““He said in week one what we had been going around for a year. We kept the company.””

““We asked him back twice. The second one was harder and he came anyway.””

What He Is Looking For

He Is Choosing You As Well.

Work that still interests him. A problem somebody has given up on, a room that has gone quiet, a number that will not come out right. He has done the comfortable years already.

He will tell you in the first call if your problem bores him, and he would rather say it then than take your money for a year. That is the same straightness you are hiring him for.

What A Man Is Actually Asked

Never What Are Your Key Strengths. Nobody Has Ever Answered That Honestly.

He is asked about the turn he is proudest of, the year that went wrong, what he can hear in a business before the numbers say it, and what he would refuse. The questions come in different shapes on purpose — a scene to step into, a sentence to finish, a plain question, a refusal — because six of the same shape is a form however beautifully each one is written.

He leaves with a page he is proud of, whether a business ever calls or not.

You Read His Whole Run, The Years He Lost As Well As The Ones He Turned.

What a business reads is the shape of a working life, kept whole. A wall showing only the ones that worked teaches everybody to hold back the hard ones — and the hard ones are exactly what a business is coming here to find.
